How an Ex-diabetic Engineer (DeWayne McCulley) Reversed His Diabetes
Oh, by the way, my name is DeWayne McCulley. I was an engineer in Corporate America for more than 20 years. But, that's not really important. What is important is that I survived a diabetic coma with a blood sugar level of 1,337 -- more than 1200 points above normal. Of course, I don't have to tell you that I was in a lot of trouble.
When I came out of the coma, I knew that I was in trouble because there were 3 doctors looking at me and my daughter (Cynthia) was standing near my bed, with tears in her eyes. She had flown in from Pittsburgh when one of my engineering managers contacted her and told her that I was in the hospital in intensive care.
Luckily for me, Cynthia knew something about nutrition and realized that I needed a lot of help. :-) So, she went out and brought back several science books about diabetes; plus, she brought me some fresh green juice and some raw salads each day while I was in intensive care. Given the seriousness of my health, the doctors were surprised that I was getting better so quickly -- but, I didn't tell them that my daughter was sneaking food into the hospital. :-)
After I got out of the hospital, my mother and sister flew up; and, along with Cynthia, they did all the grocery shopping and prepared all the meals. With their help and using my background in biochemistry and engineering, I was able to design an effective metrics-based nutritional protocol that enabled me to gradually wean myself off the insulin (4 shots a day, 60 units), Coumadin (a blood thinner for my DVT) and Lipitor (a statin drug for my high cholesterol) within 3.5 months.
After I recovered and was able to return to work, people were shocked and wanted to know how I was able to get off the insulin and other drugs so quickly. Then, someone from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) called and asked me to come and speak about my recovery -- which I did.
The next thing I knew, I was being asked to speak at several churches and health fairs; and, then, people kept asking me to write a book. My daughter, my mother and several co-workers had been after me to write a book, but, I kept turning them down.
In the meantime, I had written a little pamphlet that I would hand out at support group meeting, churches, health fairs, etc. I only did it because I thought people would ask less questions if they had something to read. :-) But, instead, it led to more questions, causing me to update and expand the pamphlet from 1 page to 10 pages to 20 pages and then 50 pages!
After a couple of doctors had reported me to the ADA for handing out false literature, I was fired by the new ADA director, who told me that just because I survived a coma didn't qualify me to write about diabetes. They felt that I was spreading false hope to other diabetics.
Needless to say, I was so upset that it motivated me to continue helping diabetics through the various church groups and other local community groups. Then, a strange thing happened. I started getting emails and phone calls from people who told me that the pamphlet helped them with their diabetes! But, they wanted more recipes and other information about meal planning, blood glucose testing, detox, supplements, etc.
Finally, my daughter and my mother convinced me to write the book -- and, so I did. And, that started me on this crazy journey of leaving the world of engineering and becoming an author and diabetes lecturer.
